GARY, IN. — G.I. stand up!! On Friday night one of our own was drafted into the NFL!! Lonnie Johnson Jr. from the G was selected with the 54th pick by the Houston Texans. The 6’2″ 213 pound cornerback out of Kentucky got the call as he celebrated with family and friends at Gary’s West High Leadership Academy.

After initially committing to Ohio State out of high school and not qualifying academically he went the junior college route, twice. Ole boy started at San Bernardino (Calif.) Valley College in 2014 then transferred to Garden City (Kansas) Community College the following season.

After continuing to struggle academically he took a year off to focus on school only. After putting in crazy work he was able to earn a scholarship to the University of Kentucky and the rest is history. Why bore you with minor details? He just got drafted in the second round!! We already know that he balled out because he’s from the G.

Let’s keep it real or all the way 100, whichever comes 1st! That’s that G.I. in him!! It’s something in the spirit of people from Gary, Indiana that doesn’t allow you to give up. I travel all over this country and run into folks from the G doin’ big things. Why? Because we’re built for this and Lonnie Johnson Jr’s no different. Obstacles? What obstacles? Those are just speed bumps.

Say what you want to say about my beloved home “The G” but it’s the best place in the world to be from. Why? Because if you can survive there you can survive anywhere playa. I wanted to wait until Sunday to write this joint because Sunday’s are for real thought provoking stories and topics.

Most people only saw a kid from G.I. getting drafted on Friday night. I saw a kid that persevered life and struggle to appreciate the light at the end of the tunnel getting brighter. Getting drafted was just part of the goal. Representing G.I. to the fullest is the ultimate goal!!

I say that because of all of the people in the G that loved everyone of us to life that gave us the confidence to fly. Lonnie will make good on the draft pick simply because he’s from Gary. He’s come through too much not to. It wasn’t given to him. He earned it every step of the way. So G.I. stand up and salute your brother. Also Salute his cousin  Jon’Vea Johnson for signing a free agent deal with the Cowboys. We’re all in to support them. Let’s get fellas and stop me when I start lyin’!
