ATTENTION Players: You’re in control of whether or not you become relevant in 2019! That ain’t on me!

It's on you to make a name for yourself not me. Photo: TheJayGravesReport

INDIANAPOLIS — Craig Bruce, the famous talent coach and radio consultant, once said, “Never question the relevance of truth, but always question the truth of relevance.” Just because something exists doesn’t make it relevant. Everybody and their baby’s momma want to be famous but nobody’s willing to put the work.

The word on these M.I.C. Football streets is that Jay Graves shows favoritism to whoever is winning. Boyz are out here throwing shade at me because I ride with whoever is winning or is good. Well playboys…I ride with whoever is relevant. That means whoever is news worthy. Let me put it where the goats can get it.

I’ve got no dog in the fight. I could care less who wins in the M.I.C. There are eight schools and One M.I.C. right? I write a daily sports column covering M.I.C. football that I sell advertising space for. That means that I’ve got to constantly have content that duns want to read. People only want to read about news and topics that are relevant. The more relevant content I have the more eyeballs are on TheJayGravesReport. The more eyeballs that read the report the more relevant my report is to viewers. The more relevant I am, the more I can charge for said ad space. It’s business playa, never personal. I don’t care who is winning or who is considered better this year etc. I just need news to feed the monster.

So when boyz say that Ben Davis got more attention on TheJayGravesReport in 2017 when they were blasting everybody from A to Z on their way to the state title and then Warren Central in 2018 got crazy attention when they were moon walking on boyz to do the same. That is 100 percent true. Why? Because they were the most relevant teams walking at the time. It only made sense to give them more coverage because they were the most relevant.

Why do I spend time writing about Center Grove and the “War Horse” Carson Steele? Because they are relevant.  Why is Carmel and cats like Dylan Downing and Cole Brevard constantly on the Report? Because they are darn good and that makes them relevant. There is a new class of studs on the horizon that I can’t wait to talk about all season but they’ve got to show up first and do work.

Let’s keep it real or all the way 100, whichever comes 1st! Just because you play in the M.I.C. and put on a uniform on Friday night doesn’t make you relevant. You’ve got to put in the work for boyz to want to know you.  Don’t playa hate me because you aren’t relevant yet. Put in the work to be good enough to be talked about.

When you turn on the television to watch the American Music Awards, the Billboard Awards or the BET Awards the only people that are on the show are the folks that are relevant. Everybody that put a record out isn’t relevant and they aren’t on those shows. When you turn on the news at night everybody didn’t make the news just because they woke up that morning. When you go to the honors recognition banquet at school everybody enrolled at the school doesn’t get an award. Only the honor students get them. The dun with the 1.8 GPA isn’t recognized. So why do you think that just because you play in the M.I.C. you should be talked about.

Stop feeling entitled for folks to make you relevant. Make yourself relevant by putting in the work. Nobody owes you anything. If you half practice all week, get out there on Friday night and get blown out by 40 points. Who do you think wants to read about you? Heck…YOU don’t even want to read about YOU. So why should I waste my time writing about you.

This ain’t little league ball where everybody pays the registration fee and gets to play. Just because you put on a uniform on Friday night doesn’t give you the right to be relevant. So as we prepare for the start of the 2019 season understand that in order for you to get famous. You’ve got to be good enough for folks to WANT to know who you are. That’s not just in sports that in life in general. That ain’t on me young playa! That’s on YOU and now you can stop me when I start lyin’!

Playas Thesaurus:

1) Dun: noun – the person in question, dude, guy, etc. It’s whoever I’m talkin’ about and its non-gender specific.

2) Put it where the goats can get it: verb phrase – to make it as elementary as possible. To put it at ground level so everyone can understand it.
