The first installment of the College Football Playoff rankings came out on Tuesday and as usual boyz are fighting mad about who’s sitting where. I’m on my soap box but not for the reasons that most cats are screaming about.
In my Biggie voice, “First things first!” The Power 5 teams that are undefeated should be sitting at the top of the list before anybody. Therefore, No.3 Clemson has no business being in front of both No.4 Ohio State and No.8 Northwestern. Holler and scream all you want about Clemson being better than them both but the Fightin’ Dabo’s have a loss, and the other two have unblemished records playing Power 5 competition.
It will eventually work itself out because Ohio State and Northwestern are in the same conference (Big Ten) and will have to face each other before it’s all said and done. However, for now they need to be sitting in front of Clemson.
Miss me with the No.8 Cincinnati and all the crying about undefeated BYU being ranked No.14. Neither one of them have played anybody. They’re not about to put them at the top of the pile even within striking distance of making the playoffs with those schedules. Stop it.
Now I feel sorry for BYU because they’re simply a victim of circumstance because being an FBS Independent they initially had six Power 5 schools on their schedule. The pandemic changed everything for them because the Pac-12, Big Ten and SEC went to conference only schedules. So that killed them and they had to scramble just to fill their schedule.
They initially had Utah, Michigan State, Minnesota, Missouri, Arizona State and Stanford on the books. Then they had to get who they could get to play them at the last minute. So yes, they’re 9-0 but they’ve play a bunch of rudy-poots. They’ve played Navy, Troy, LA Tech, UTSA, Houston, Texas State, Western Kentucky, Boise State and North Alabama.
You can’t be in the top 10 playing the little sisters of the poor every week even if it’s not your fault. It ain’t gonna happen playa.
So again, my only issue with the initial rankings is Clemson being in the top 4 right now because they’ve got a loss and both Ohio State and Northwestern still have unblemished records…at least for now. This thing is fluid and things will eventually work itself out. Putting BYU and Cincinnati too close to the top is dangerous because they will get their doors blown off against real Top 6 teams. Stop me when I start lyin’!
