With 4.8 seconds left in overtime Warren Central’s Dean Tate had ice water runnin’ through his veins when he stepped to the foul line to knock down two free throws. Those two buckets nailed the coffin shut on the defendin’ Class 4A State Champs, Ben Davis Giants’ hopes of repeatin’. “Them Boyz from the East Side” walked outta the joint with a 48-46 win to advance to the Regional Final Game tonight against a scrappy Terre Haute South team that knocked off Mt. Vernon in the first game of the day.
Warren Central pulled a Ben Davis’ Mark James on a boy in the first quarter stallin’ the ball instead of runnin’ up and down the floor. At the end of the 1st quarter the score was 5-4 Ben Davis. You already know that I was hot because it was way too many athletes on the floor for the score to be in single digits.
At the break it was 17-16 Warren Central as they were playin’ right into Ben Davis’ hands. Dawand Jones, the Ben Davis Gaint, literally, was havin’ his way early because Warren seemed to be accommodatin’ him by stallin’ the ball. However, the big man got into foul trouble and had to sit at the 6:25 mark of the fourth quarter.
What blew my mind was that Ben Davis head coach Mark James never put him back into the game until 38 seconds left in overtime!!
Warren Central started runnin’ the floor and created all types of problems for BD down the stretch. BD’s Aaron Henry took over in the final minutes but it wasn’t enough as the Warriors proved to boyz why they were in fact 28-0 and No.1 in the state!!
They’re battle tested and walked outta the joint with the “W” to play tonight in the Regional Final! Stop me when I start lyin’!
