INDIANAPOLIS, IN. — On September 1, 2017 I covered the “Battle of Lawrence,” the annual football game between Lawrence Central and Lawrence North. It was a helluva ball game with both teams playin’ their hearts out. Lawrence Central eventually won it 26-21 but I walked away impressed with a particular kid runnin’ the rock for LN.

Durin’ the game I took over 1,000 pictures and one seemed to stand out over all of the rest in my mind. It was a picture of this stud running back with the coolest name. He wore No.5 and boy could he go. His name was Trevon Bonds but all the homies called him Tre. So when they would call his name over the loud speaker, “Tre Bonds on the carry!” I thought that it sounded so cool. All night long I kept sayin’ to myself. “Man I like the way that kid totes the rock and he’s so smooth and in control! And his name is Tre Bonds!!” Swag!!!!

LN’s Tre Bonds straight smooth on a boy!

I never thought that I would get up on Wednesday mornin’ only to see that very picture all over social media with a caption that read “RIP” attached to it. Tre Bonds 19, had been shot and killed on Tuesday night at about 7:10pm on the west side of Indy at the Waterfront Terrace Apartments near 34th and Georgetown Road.

He’d just graduated from high school three weeks ago and had the rest of his life ahead of him. It’s such a tragedy to see our young thunder cats dying at such a tender age. They’re leavin’ this earth before they’re allowed to mature into adulthood.

Let’s keep it real or all the way 100, whichever comes 1st! We all would like to live a long life but God has marked the day and time that we are to be born and when we must die.

Tre only lived 19 years but the most important piece of his legacy is the DASH between the day of his birth and the day of his death. Young playas…it’s the dash that counts not the length of time that you live. It’s about what you do with the time that you have on this earth and how much of an impact you can make durin’ that dash that’s important. That’s what made Tre the person that everyone will miss. His dash was obviously powerful because of the outpourin’ of love that he’s receivin’ right now. He lived life to the fullest. It was the dash that made boyz respect him while he was alive.

So although God has called the lil’ homie home, his friends and family can hold on to the dash that he’s left for everyone to remember him by. Now it’s time for those that have been left here to mourn his death to get serious about establishin’ an unforgettable dash for their lives. Rest in peace young playa and we’ll see you on the other side. Stop me when I start lyin’!

Playas Thesaurus:

The G is excluded from the endings of all words because the G is near and dear to my heart because I’m from “The G” which is Gary, Indiana. So I only use the G when I’m talkin’ about “The G!”

The caption under the photo isn’t real but its real talk!
