LAWRENCE — The Sectional 10 Championship is tonight and everybody and their Uncle LeRoy, Cousin Man-Man and homeboy Rollo will be in the building!! It’s Round III of Warren Central vs. Lawrence Central! In street terms it’s Round III of the Big Body Chevy vs. the Funky ’79 Impala!
Back in January the two met over at Southport for the Marion County Championship and it was NUTS!!!! Lawrence Central led for all but the final two minutes of the game giving Warren Central body blow after body blow but the duns from the FAR EAST SIDE just kept on taking their best shot. When the smoke finally cleared the Warriors walked out of the joint with a 60-56 win to extend their winning streak at the time to 46 games.
Lawrence Central’s Nijel Pack did everything imaginable to Warren Central that night only to fall short. However, just four days later Lawrence Central pulled up at the crib in the Impala sittin’ on them thangs and got revenge. Dub-C jumped out of the Big Body Chevy in the first half and did work on the Bears leading by 11 at the break.
I don’t know what Big Momma said in the LC locker room during that halftime but it worked. Al Gooden’s squad went on a 34-13 run in the second half to sprint past the Warriors 54-44 to snap the Warriors 46 game winning streak. LC did massive work as they showed the Indiana basketball world that they were, in fact, a serious threat to everybody playing this game this year.
So let’s keep it real or all the way 100, whichever comes 1st! These two teams have split the series so far 1 apiece. However, Lawrence Central dominated the Marion County Championship Game leading all but the final two minutes. Then they went on a 34-13 run to win and dominate the second half of the second meeting.
At this point they’re purring like a kitten with all the homies on deck. Jake Laravia just exploded for 31 points on Friday night to put away North Central to advance to tonight’s title game. He’s been brewing all season doing crazy work. Then they’ve got Dre Davis and the best point guard in the state in Nijel Pack. They 100 percent believe that they can walk out of the joint with the Sectional 10 Championship. Confidence and crazy swagger is hard to beat.
However, when you’re from the FAR EAST SIDE and you’ve already been to the promise land your expectations are even greater. Sure, they struggled on Friday night to get past Lawrence North but they got past them even though they didn’t play well. They understand what it takes to win in big games like this. Big Moments have become normal to them.
Keep in mind that they ran the table last season finishing 32-0 to win the Class 4A title when they were on the verge of taking an “L” in at least 7 ball games during that journey. However, the “Can’t Fold Won’t” theme song was bumpin’ in the Big Body Chevy every time. Just like it was last night when they were down 13-7 at the break looking for answers.
So if you want to see good old fashioned barn burner or like we used to say in the hood, a Sho-Nuff, Sho-Nuff, make sure you’re at Lawrence North High School tonight for The Big Body Chevy vs. The Funky ’79 Impala tonight!!!
