I can remember not too long ago when folks were upset/hating on Alex Rodriguez for getting paid down in Texas in 2001 when the Rangers signed him to a 10 year/ $252 million contract. It was the largest contract ever signed and boyz weren’t happy about it. Boyz, as in, media/fans/players/duns with nothing else to do but hate.
Since then nobody’s trippin’ on cats getting bread because that’s the name of the game. On Tuesday Manny Machado got the biggest bag in American sports history when he signed a 10 year/$300 million deal with the San Diego Padres. You could hear a pin drop.
It’s funny how 18 years after A-Rod got the first major bag nobody’s trippin’ over a player getting his money. Nobody!!! Why? Because everybody wants their bag too. Since Rodriguez broke the glass on players getting major bread we’ve seen a lot of cats walking out of front offices with bags they can’t even carry.
Not only did A-Rod get the first but he opted out of that deal in 2008 and picked up another one with the Yankees for 10 years at $275 million. You already know boyz were hating on him for getting it again. But why?
Then the big homie Albert Pujols grabbed the money and ran after an 11-year run with the Cardinals and signed a 10-year $240 million deal with the Angels. How could you be mad at him for signing that one. First of all, it’s LA and secondly it’s LA!! Would you rather be rich in St. Louis or in LA where you can be a celebrity among celebrities? Would you rather live in Sunset Hills in Crestwood, MO. or in Malibu? No brainer.
There have been others that have signed $200 plus million deals since A-Rod got the original bag like Robinson Cano (7 years/$217M), David Price (7 years/$217M), Prince Fielder (9 years/$214M), Max Scherzer 7 years $210M) and a host of others. It’s become the norm for boyz get their money and nobody’s trippin’ right?
But why was everybody so upset that A-Rod got two historic bags but nobody tripped on the other players getting their money? Yes, it’s become the norm for boyz to get big money but why were people still trippin’ off of A-Rod getting his bread? Well playas…it goes back to the original school yard foolishness of cats being jealous of the pretty boy that gets all of the women and he can play ball too. Yes, all pro ball players get their share of women but A-Rod had the masses of women going crazy over him and standard cats didn’t like that. It had nothing to do with his game so stop it. Boyz were jealous of him.
Nobody’s upset that Manny Machado just signed the biggest contract in the history of American sports because they aren’t jealous of him. He’s just one of the fellas. In my DJay voice from Hustle and Flow, “Git ya money mane!” Stop me when I start lyin’!
