INDIANAPOLIS, IN. — As everyone around the M.I.C. is gettin’ prepared for the 2018 season to kick off on August 17 boyz are in the middle of their pre-season camps. On Saturday I had the pleasure to hangin’ out with Coach Jimmy Graves and the Pike Red Devils durin’ their intra-squad scrimmage.

Coming off of a 6-5 record and makin’ an appearance in the sectional championship game against a hungry Fishers team that knocked them off 28-7. The Red Devils are lookin’ to build on the excitement that they created last year by bein’ able to put up crazy numbers with their explosive offense. Even though they got knocked off in the sectionals it was blessin’ to even get that far.  The the year before they didn’t win a single game goin’ 0-10 in 2016.

So to complete the 2017 campaign in the top half of the best conference in the state was a boost of confidence that they surely needed as a program. However, this current Red Devils ball club is young after losing 34 seniors to graduation. They’ve got to have several young players step up and fill some big shoes.

At quarterback Jasen Graves is takin’ over to Jordan Garrett who put up a ridiculous QB ratin’ of 108.5 last year. Ole boy threw for 2,359 yards and 27 touchdowns and put up another 392 yards on the ground and a touchdown. Those are some huge shoes for the junior to fill although he did see plenty of playing time as a sophomore.

Coach Graves is encouraged by what he sees out of his young team thus far in camp but he continues to stress that they must keep getting better. Their philosophy as a team is No B.C.D.’s and R.I.S.E. That means no blamin’, no complainin’ and no defendin’ and every player must show up with a relentless intense savage effort. That’s even while running onto the field. It’s serious business over there playa!!

The Red Devils are looking to newly team voted captains to lead their squad year. They’ve got left tackle Jordyn “Boobie” Law and quarterback Jasen Graves headin’ up the offense. While defensive back Trashaun Jones and linebacker Wiseman Clark will be holdin’ down the defense.

Even though Pike will be young and somewhat inexperienced they’re excited about buildin’ on the success of the 2017 season.

It should be a fun one to watch this team grow this year. They open at the crib against Zionsville on the 17th. Get your popcorn ready because the fireworks will be on display at Pike once again this year.

Playas Thesaurus: Learn these words this season!

1) Dun: noun – the person in question, dude, guy, etc. It’s whoever I’m talkin’ about and its non-gender specific.

2) Put it where the goats can get it: verb phrase – to make it as elementary as possible. To put it at ground level so everyone can understand it.

3) Ole boy: noun – the person that I’m currently talkin’ about.

The G is excluded from the endings of all words because the G is near and dear to my heart because I’m from “The G” which is Gary, Indiana. So I only use the G when I’m talkin’ about “The G!”
