It blows my mind how we live in a world where nobody thinks for themselves and it only takes one person to say something stupid and it’s off to the races with “Group Think.” Earlier this week Coach K told reporters that it essentially didn’t make sense to be playing basketball during the worst of the pandemic and that the NCAA Tournament should at least be pushed back now that a COVID-19 vaccine was on the horizon.
He said more but that was the gist of it. We shouldn’t be playing and that everyone is just plowing through this. In a nut shell, it’s stupid and irresponsible to be playing sports right now like I’ve been saying since last spring. Not if our goal is to get the pandemic under control so that we can move on with our lives.
It’s irresponsible to play sports, especially contact sports in the middle of a pandemic because the players are breathing on one another the entire game. The NBA was able to complete the season because they created a bubble and kept EVERYBODY inside of it. High schools and colleges can’t do that; A) because they don’t have the resources (high school and smaller colleges) B) there are too many people and moving parts at the major college level to even begin to think about doing it. Creating a bubble would be impossible and would cost a fortune that the schools wouldn’t want to spend. They’re already losing their shirts without fans.
However, it only took one idiot to jump out of the birthday cake butt naked foamin’ at the mouth slamming Coach K for actually thinking and making a rational statement. Alabama head coach Nate Oates didn’t waste any time trying to get famous. Who? My point bruh! Nate Oates! He just started his second season as a big time college basketball coach and had this to say about the winningest coach in the history of the freakin’ game.
“Do you think if Coach K hadn’t lost the two non-conference games at home that he’d still be saying that?”
Duke has started the season 2-2 with a blowout loss to Illinois this week 83-68. That’s when Coach K made his comments about playing during this pandemic in the post-game press conference.
First of all, Oates was born in 1974. Coach K was an assistant at Indiana in 1974 and began his head coaching career at Army in ’75. So the dun has been coaching at a high level for the entirety of Oates’ life.
How on earth can you try to take a shot at greatness when you’ve accomplished nothing yet. Oates has coached at Maranatha Baptist for 3 years, Wisconsin Whitewater for two and then coached high school basketball for 11 years before getting an assistant’s job at Buffalo for two years. Then he took over as the head coach in 2015 for four years. His first major head coaching position was when he took over at Alabama last season where he was 19-16. He’s 2-3 overall in the NCAA Tournament but he’s got the nerve to question the motives of the all-time winningest college basketball coach’s motives? Are you kidding me?
Coach K is spitting on those two losses bruh! He’s forgotten more about the game of basketball than Oates will ever know. As a matter of fact, Oates will be fired in the next two years never to be heard from again because he’s coaching basketball at a football school. He’s never going to win there because they aren’t playing basketball at Alabama. Ask the other 50 cats that have taken that job and been fired in less than 5 years.
So he needs to worry about his exit strategy instead of trying to blast Coach K to get famous.
This whole thing is irresponsible. The teams run out on the floor and breathe all over each other for 40 minutes, then socially distance on the sideline only to put on a mask to go home. Think about how stupid that is not only in college sports but in high school sports too.
It’s even worse at the high school level because they don’t have the resources to test the kids daily. The only way they know if a kid is positive is if they get their own test after someone in their family tests positive etc. So any number of kids are playing at this very minute with COVID-19 and no one knows it because they’re symptomatic. It’s grossly irresponsible to be playing contact sports right now.
That’s like telling a boy it’s okay to have unprotected sex but to make sure you put the condom on on your drive home. Stop me when I start lyin’!
