AVON — The Ben Davis Giants rolled over to Avon for a little Saturday afternoon showdown with the Orioles. The Giants were coming off of a huge win last Saturday over Crispus Attucks and it didn’t take long before they were jumping all over the Orioles. When the dust settled it was 69-53.

Ben Davis came out of the ride shooting that thang as they went up 6-0 right out of the gate with Cameron Maul knocking down early buckets. I must say that ole boy played his most complete game of the year finishing with 11 points, 7 assists and 5 rebounds. He was in complete control of the wheel for the Giants.

Before a boy could bite into his hot dog good they were up 18-6 by way of crazy transition buckets and they literally swatting everything Avon was putting in the air to start the game.

Avon finally settled down and got into a rhythm to climb back into it. Jaden Brewer was handling his business for the Orioles pushing the tempo and getting to the rack as he finished with 15 points. By the end of the first quarter Ben Davis was up 18-12.

Avon opened the second quarter with a wide open three to get within three points 18-15 as they looked to make a run. However, Don Carlisle’s horses dug their heels in and before you knew it they were up 31-20. With Maul running the point like a straight up quarterback. He opened the door for both Jalen Windham and Dawand Jones to show like my momma used to say, “Their bare bottoms.” They each finished the day with 16 points.

Dawand had three ridiculous Yokes before halftime!! For all of y’all that don’t know what a yoke is, it’s a monster dunk where everybody’s gotta get out of the way before somebody gets hurt. Put that in your memory bank and throw away the key because I’ll use it all of the time, That’s some old school G.I. vernacular.

At the break Ben Davis had extended their lead to 39-26.

I don’t know what was said at the break but the Giants came out of the locker room with so much swag and confidence that they immediately went on a 8-2 run to put them up 48-28 and the game was pretty much over at that point. Avon never recovered.

Ben Davis can be an extremely good when they play with some confidence. The ball moves better and everybody understands their roles. Again, Cameron Maul’s play was the difference for the Giants.

They got a little careless with the rock late in the third quarter but they were so far ahead it really didn’t make a difference. However, those are things that would need some serious attention if they were playing a tighter game.

With 6:26 left in the game Dawand Jones picked up a technical foul for hanging on the rim. I was standing right under the basket shooting pictures and the kid was literally protecting himself from boyz moving around underneath him. Terrible call but boyz know how to keep it movin’ right? BD gets out with a win and it’s on to Lawrence North next week.
