CHICAGO — Well playas…the Chicago Bears have clinched the NFC North, made the playoffs and shut my darn mouth!!! They knocked off the Green Bay Packers at Soldier Field 24-17 on Sunday afternoon to win their 10th game of the season but most importantly put everybody and their baby’s momma on notice.
The Bears are back and I’ve got to eat crow today. At the beginning of the season they made what I thought was the worst financial decision of the franchises history when they paid Khalil Mack $141 million dollars with $90 million guaranteed. I never said that the dun wasn’t one of the best defensive players in the league. What I said was, the dun wasn’t going to make enough of a difference to help them make the playoffs.
Well playas…I was DEAD wrong and I’m man enough to admit it. They had a top 5 defense before he got there but they didn’t win but four games in 2017. So how on earth will a defensive end elevate a team not only on defense but on offense as well? How could first year head coach Matt Nagy turn the ship around from 4 wins to making the playoffs over night? Not only did they make the playoffs but they won 10 games and clinched the division!!! Nagy becomes the first coach in Bears history to win 10 games in his first season since George Halas in 1920. That’s NUTS and darn near 100 years ago!!!! And you’ve got to put the credit on the defense headed by Mack. Did I say already that I’m eating crow right now?
You’ve got to believe that Khalil Mack was the instigator of all of that. Sure, he doesn’t touch the ball nor does he catch or run touchdowns but he creates all types of problems on the defensive side of the ball. His presence alone made the difference in jump starting everything else. I still don’t believe that a defensive player is worth $141 million with $90 million GUARANTEED but does it really matter who you paid the bread to as long as they’re winning?
So if they’d paid Mitch Trubisky the $141 million and they were 10-4 after clinching the division nobody, including me would have said a word. So therefore, let me shut my big mouth and congratulate the Bears on making the playoffs and proving me wrong. Stop me when I start lyin’!
