On Friday American Gold Medalist fencer Race Imbolden took a knee as the national anthem played at the Pan American Games in Lima, Peru, to protest racism, gun control, mistreatment of immigrants and President Donald Trump.
Afterwards, he tweeted a picture of him protesting with these words, “We must call for change. This week I am honored to represent Team USA at the Pan Am Games, taking home Gold and Bronze. My pride however has been cut short by the multiple shortcomings of the country I hold so dear to my heart. Racism, Gun Control, mistreatment of immigrants, and a President who spreads hate are at the top of a long list.”
He goes on to say, “I chose to (sacrifice) my moment today at the top of the podium to call attention to issues that I believe need to be addressed. I encourage others to please use your platforms for empowerment and change.”

Let’s keep it real or all the way 100, whichever comes 1st! It’s about time!!! In the words of the big homie Martin Luther King Jr. in his letter from the Birmingham jail, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.”

This isn’t just a people of color problem in America and I’m happy to see one of our white brothers acknowledge it. It’s going to take all Americans to say enough is enough. We as a country have to stand up against what is wrong. Not just those that are being mistreated. That’s why I applaud this young man for using his platform to make a statement.

Most folks looked at what Colin Kaepernick was doing and completely dismissed it because none of what he was protesting effected them personally. It’s a YOU problem to most folks. They’re children aren’t being pulled over by the police and being shot in simple traffic stops. Their family members aren’t being arrested and ending up dead in their cells. Nobody that they know or even looks like them have been arrested and killed in front of a convenience store by the police for selling loose cigarettes after telling them that he couldn’t breathe.

The bodies of their loved ones haven’t been left in the middle of the street for 4 hours after being shot and killed by the police. They haven’t been targeted as a race of people by white supremacists while simply shopping at Walmart or while hanging out at the bars trying to have a good time.

All of this has taken place while the powers that be have stood silent because it doesn’t effect “them and theirs” for lack of a better term. So thank you Race for standing along side of those that have been affected by this injustice. We need more people to get their heads out of the sand. When you stick your head in the sand you expose your butt to the world. Don’t be that person. Stop me when I start lyin’!
