INDIANAPOLIS, IN.– On Friday night immediately after the defendin’ Class 6A state champs, Ben Davis Giants, were knocked off by Avon 41-36, I had a chance to holler at their new head coach. Their winnin’ streak of 15 games had finally come to an end. It was a CLASSIC where the Giants had the ball on the last possession on a 4th and 33 as the clock expired on the last play.
I stuck a camera in first year head coach Jason Simmons’ face to get his reaction. The first thing that jumped out of his mouth was “First and formost I love this group of kids. Uh they’ve been nothing but competitors and they did it again tonight.”
That’s all I needed to hear right there bruh!! As soon as he said that he loved his team and that he supported them because they competed, it was really a wrap at that point. I didn’t need to hear another word. This is a first year head coach takin’ over a powerhouse program that is comin’ off of one of the most remarkable seasons in school history. They went 14-0 beatin’ the brakes, transmission and doors off of everybody in their path last year and now he’s got crazy pressure to at least keep the car in the road.
Nobody’s lookin’ for the dun to repeat as state champs or nothin’ like that but they do expect to win football games and a lot of them. Why? Because it’s Ben Davis!!
Let’s keep it real or all the way 100, whichever comes 1st! With that type of pressure on a boy this early in his career at BD I wasn’t expectin’ him to say that he loved the kids right out of the gate. I thought that he would get right into the game’s chaos and all of that but he put it right on the table. “I love these kids!”
That’s the type of coach I would want my kids playin’ for. Love them hard and coach them even harder. Ben Davis did a great job in hirin’ this great young coach. Good luck playas and stop me when I start lyin’!
