Who should win vs. Who will win the Heisman on Saturday? “Hype vs. Substance”

On Thursday night the College Football Awards went down in Atlanta and it was Chris Brown up in that piece, “On and Poppin’!” There were several awards given but everybody was watching to see who would win the Davey O’Brien Award and the Maxwell Award. Why? Because those two awards give a really good indication as to who will win the Heisman on Saturday.

Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa won the Maxwell Award for Player of the Year and Oklahoma’s Kyler Murray won the Davey O’Brien Award given to the nation’s top quarterback. Earlier in the day they split two other very important awards. The Walter Camp Award given to the Best Player went to Tagovailoa while the Associated Press’ Player of the Year went to Murray.

So walking out of the Awards show if history is on his side Tagovailoa has a better shot at winning the Heisman than Murray. Why? Because the past four Maxwell winners and past five Walter Camp winners have gone on to win the Heisman.

Here’s something to think about as well. In four of the last five years the Heisman has gone to the winner of the Davey O’Brien Award and only 5 Heisman winners have failed to win the AP Player of the Year Award since 1998. I’m just scrambling your brain before I tell you my thoughts on all of this foolishness.

There’s a difference between who’s going to win the award verses who should win it. It’s no different than any other award given. The politics and hype win the award most of the time and not the most deserving player.

Let’s keep it real or all the way 100, whichever comes 1st! Tua Tagovailoa will win it because of the hype of Alabama alone. They’ve been No.1 from wire to wire this season and don’t think for one minute these media-types didn’t include him coming off of the bench in last year’s national title game to win it. We all know that last year isn’t supposed to count but in their minds it will. He’s thrown for 37 touchdowns and only 4 interceptions leading the Crimson Tide to and undefeated season so far.

However, the dun that’s most deserving of the award is Kyler Murray because he’s got a quarterback rating of 96.0 which is the highest rating in the FBS in at least the past 15 years. He’s also responsible for 51 touchdowns tied with Dwayne Haskins of Ohio State. Not only that, he’s the only player in the history of college football that has averaged 300 yards passing and 60 yards rushing. Ole boy’s done what nobody in the history of the game has done. There’s no way he shouldn’t win it but more than likely he won’t because of the hype machine following Alabama.

Most of these cats voting don’t pay attention to what’s real they become group thinkers and if the hype is on one thing they roll with whatever the hype is. If the award is supposed to go to the most outstanding player of the year then there is no question Kyler Murray should win it.

It’s no different than the dull NBA’s MVP Award every year. It doesn’t go to the MOST VALUABLE PLAYER it goes to the best player on the best team. So I’ll be sitting in the cut watching this foolishness play out on Saturday. Stop me when I start lyin’!
