The War Horse rides off into the sunset with the biggest award of his high school career. Center Grove running back Carson Steele was named IndyStar Mr. Football 2020 by the Indiana Football Coaches Association. It wasn’t even close with him getting 51 percent of the vote with Avon offensive lineman Blake Fisher getting 17 percent and Lawrence North quarterback Donaven McCulley finishing with 11 percent.

You can’t argue with greatness because the War Horse, as I like to call him, put in crazy work to come back from a serious hamstring injury and broken foot that sidelined him for all but three games his junior.

After losing the Class 6A state title a year ago to Carmel 20-17. Steele put the Trojans on his back to lead them to a 14-0 season winning the state title going wire to wire ranked No.1 and finishing with a No.10 ranking in the nation. He finished his senior season rushing for 1,659 yards and 31 touchdowns. He also caught seven passes for 152 yards and another 2 touchdowns. NUTS!!!

I know that the Mr. Football award isn’t a career award but you can’t dismiss the fact that he’s been a complete beast for four years.

I can remember interviewing Coach Eric Moore for the season preview of 2017 and saying that he had a freshman that would get some run. Well playas…that freshman popped a 93 yard sprint in the second half of the season opener at Warren Central. He helped to lead a comeback from being down 27-0 to Center Grove only losing that game 27-24. The War Horse became OFFICIAL on that day.

He went on to rush for darn near 6,000 yards and 82 touchdowns over the course of his career. Incredible!!!

He put up 1,703 yards and 20 touchdowns as a freshman. Then came back his sophomore season and dropped off 2,270 yards and 29 touchdowns. He only played in three games his junior year and hit a boy up for 275 yards and two touchdowns helping the Trojans get to the state title game.

Oh yeah playa, Carson Steele is that dude and deserved that Mr. Football award more than anybody breathing this year. Salute my young brother! It’s been an absolute pleasure to watch you do your thing. Good luck at the next level. Stop me when I start lyin’!
