Stanford escapes Arizona to win the National Championship! “Thriller”

The Stanford Cardinal are the champions of Women’s college basketball for the first time since 1992! After a thriller that went down to the final shot coach Tara VanDerveer and Co. walked off with the trophy. Arizona gave it all it had but it wasn’t enough.

They threw everything including the kitchen sink at Arie McDonald, the tournaments leading scorer, who still finished with 22 points. She never found her rhythm.

With 6.1 seconds left McDonald ended up with the ball and everybody in the building stopped breathing but the Cardinal defense. They swarmed and McDonald put up the shot but never got a clean look. She missed it and it was a wrap.

A fantastic game to top off an even better NCAA Tournament. Maybe they should play the post-season in a bubble for now on. Just pick a city and let it rip. This was great.

Haley Jones led the Cardinal with 17 points and was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player.

The Men’s championship game in Monday night. If it’s half as good as the Women’s title games we’re in for a treat.
