Men’s Big Ten Tournament Update: Minnesota knocks off the Boilermakers to advance!

CHICAGO, ILL.- The Minnesota men’s basketball team had 4 players score all but 3 of their 75 points in a huge win over No.2 Purdue 75-73 in the Big Ten Quarterfinals Friday evening.

The Golden Gophers began the game shooting six of eight from the field on six assists. Before the first media timeout they went on an 8-2 run to go up 12-7 over Purdue to start.

Purdue bounced back with a 7-0 run to taking the lead back 17-15. The Boilers tried all they could to slow down the Gophers, but Minnesota continued to share the ball making 14 field goals on 14 assists. Purdue had four turnovers in the first half with three of them coming from Carsen Edwards, who had six points and one assist in the first half. The Gophers shot 63 percent from the field in the first half and had three in double figures; Jordan Murphy had 10, Amir Coffey added 10, and Gabe Kalscheur scored 11.

The Boilers struggled in the first half to get shots to fall as they trailed at the half 42-29, as they shot 14 of 32 from the field and 3 of 12 from the field.

To start the second half Purdue continued to go cold. They went 0-5 from three and 3 of 11 from the field. The Boilers caught fire going on a 17-6 run with 7:51 left in the game that gained the lead 62-61.

For the duration of the game both teams went head to head coming down to two free throws for Dupree McBrayer of Minnesota who made the first and missed the second. Carsen Edwards missed the shot at the buzzer to send it into overtime that left the Gophers with the win 75-73.

Jordan Murphy finished with a game high 27 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 assists and teammate Amir Coffey added 21 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 assists for Minnesota.

Matt Haarms finished with 16 points and 3 rebounds and Ryan Cline has 14 points and 8 assists for Purdue.

Minnesota will move on to play in tomorrows Semifinal Matchup at 2:30 pm.
