Have you ever heard of a boy makin’ a charitable contribution? Well playas…that’s what Decatur Central did down the stretch against Pike on Friday night. They gifted the Red Devils at spot in the Sectional Championship Game against Ben Davis on Saturday night. They loss 55-49 when they clearly outplayed their opponent for three quarters.

The Hawks outworked, outplayed and out hustled the kids from the northwest side but couldn’t keep the darn ball in their hands.

Pike was up 9-8 at the end of the first quarter then Decatur Central goes on a 11-6 run to take a 19-14 lead into the break. The Hawks seemed to put their feet on the gas with a 7-2 run to start the second half to go up 26-16 midway through of the third on pure effort alone.

However, Pike must have seen Big Momma in the crowd fussin’ with her head scarf on and locked down on defense which forced what seemed like a turnover every time Decatur Central tried to inbound the ball. By the 4:21 mark of the fourth Pike had the joint all knotted up at 47 with the Hawks on their heels.

So give credit to Pike for their resilience down the stretch and the defense that made all the difference in the world.  They were led by senior Steve Miller’s 18 points followed by Darian Porch’s 14. The Red Devils advance to the title game against the Ben Davis Giants on Saturday night and now you can stop me when I start lyin’!

The G is excluded from the endings of all words because the G is near and dear to my heart because I’m from “The G” which is Gary, Indiana. So I only use the G when I’m talkin’ about “The G!”
