D’Angelo, the founder of Collegiate Empowerment, broke it down like this, “Without a sense of caring, there can be no sense of community.” Then the big homie H. Jackson Brown Jr., the author, poured out a lil’ liquor for all the dead homies when he spit, “Live so that when your children think of fairness, caring, and integrity, they think of you.”
Well playas…that’s exactly what Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt is doin’! When people think of fairness, carin’ and integrity they think of him. In the face of such horrible tragedy in the Houston area with Hurricane Harvey comin’ through and puttin’ in work last week. The football star used his platform to make a difference. A week ago he went online and asked people to help him raise $200,000 to help the people of Texas affected by the storm and in a week’s time he’s raise $18 million with a new goal of $20 million!! OUTSTANDIN’ work right?
When God blesses you to have the type of platform that duns like J.J. Watt have we are always happy to see them use it. Because if Johnny Washington, the mailman down the street, had gotten online and made the same request he’d still be tryin’ to get $300 a week later. So by J.J. Watt usin’ his celebrity he’s been able to make a HUGE impact in the community that he works. Wouldn’t you agree?
Well let’s keep it real or all the way 100, whichever comes 1st! So why is it that when duns like LeBron, Chris Paul, Derrick Rose, D. Wade or Colin Kaepernick use their platforms to speak out against racial and social injustice fans and media are quick to tell them to just “shut up and play?” When the Miami Heat led by LeBron and D. Wade put on the hoodies after Treyvon Martin was killed boyz told them to shut up and play. When cats all over the NBA and NFL put on “I Can’t Breathe” T-shirts after Eric Garner was choked to death to bring attention to the injustice of police brutality boyz told them to shut up and play.
When Colin Kaepernick kneeled durin’ the national anthem to protest police brutality and racial injustice, not to mention all of the philanthropic work he’s doin’ all over the world for poor people of color, they continued to tell him to shut up and play.
Now if we’ve all agreed that we should applaud professional athletes for usin’ their celebrity to help those in need in the communities that they work in. Then why is it that J.J. Watt is a hero and the others aren’t? Why is it that J.J. Watt is bein’ nominated by the media for the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award already and the others are condemned for tryin’ to help their communities too.
Somewhere somebody needs to explain to me why there’s such a disconnect on what helpin’ people looks and feels like? I’m just askin’ bruh because I thought that helpin’ people was helpin’ people was helpin’ people. It shouldn’t matter what color the people are that are bein’ helped. Just something to think about playboy and stop me when I start lyin’!
