As I pulled up to downtown Indy on Saturday afternoon there was a sea of red that had taken over the joint. The Louisville Cardinals had landed like ET and were eatin’ up every stitch of real estate within a 15 block radius of Lucas Oil Stadium. It seemed that there wasn’t a drop of black and gold to be found bruh. I thought to myself, it’s about to be a loooooooong day for the Purdue Boilermakers.
Then the No.16 ranked Louisville Cardinals run out of the locker room led by the 2016 Heisman trophy winner, Lamar Jackson, in the funky all-white joints with the red metallic helmets. “Oh it’s about to be a problem,” I said to myself. They kicked the joint off with Louisville completely dominatin’ the game statistically but makin’ every mistake imaginable only to escape by the hair of their chinny chin-chin with a 35-28 win.
The Cards simply walked the ball down the field like a well oiled machine on their first possession only to cough it up at the goal line. So Purdue draws first blood on a 26 yard pass from Elijah Sindelar to Jackson Anthrop as they took advantage of the gift. For the remainder of the first half that was the story of Louisville’s life. They were killin’ Purdue with time of possession and total yards but had only managed 10 freakin’ points.
Lamar Jackson was literally havin’ his way with Purdue. At the end of the first quarter the dun had 130 yards passin’ and 57 yards rushin’. He finished the night with a total of 478 yards and 2 touchdown but they barely got out of the joint alive. He threw for 378 yards on 30/46 passin’ and ran for another 107 yards on 21 carries.
Louisville should have beaten the dog snot out of Purdue but they kept turnin’ the ball over and gettin’ penalized. They finished with three turnovers and 16 penalties for 110 yards.
Give the Boilermakers props for playin’ with crazy discipline and not doin’ anything to hurt themselves. They only committed one turnover and played the hand that they were dealt all night and almost beat these boyz. They’re goin’ to be a very good team goin’ foward under new head coach Jeff Brohm. They played better than expected in his debut as the Boilermakers’ new head man.
At one point just before the half the Boilers were only down 10-7 but the Cards had piled up 228 yards of total offense to Purdue’s 58 with a time of possession of 17:43 to 7 bruh. They should have been gettin’ blasted at that point. However, the Purdue defense was patient and controlled even after bein’ on the field for so long. Props to Purdue for that.
Over a period of time and with Louisville’s help they closed the gap and went ahead just before the half 14-10 to gain some confidence. Despite Lamar Jackson puttin’ on the clown shoes and doin’ everything but cook the hot dogs in the concession stand. They held their own! On some real talk, how many times are you goin’ to open up with the reignin’ Heisman trophy winner in the lifetime of the program?
They aren’t goin’ to face another cat that good for the next 30 years on day one let alone all year. So that should give the Boilermakers a boost of confidence in and of itself. I was impressed with their composure and their attitude on Saturday night. They didn’t let Louisville just come in and punk them. They made them earn everything they got and when a boy is playin’ with the Joker there’s not much you can do with them. Stop me when I start lyin’!
