Both Romeir Elliott and David Bell got robbed in the Mr. Football voting! “Not Even Close”

Romeir Elliott and David Bell clearly the two best players in Indiana. Photo: TheJayGravesReport

When the IndyStar announced the four finalists for their Annual Mr. Football Award a week ago and Warren Central’s Romeir Elliott wasn’t one of the four it was a problem. Everybody and their Uncle LeRoy could see the hustle getting out of the car down the street at midnight. If the kid that rushed for 2,980 yards and 40 touchdowns in the BEST conference in the state to lead his team to a 14-0 record and a Class 6A State Title wasn’t even a finalist? Then we already knew that his teammate, The Incomparable David Bell, who was a US Army All-American, Gatorade Player of the Year and a 4-Time Max Preps All-American wasn’t going to win the award either. Why? Because the fix was already in.

Instead, Jack Kiser from Pioneer a Class A school, won the award. It was the first time a player from a Class A program has won the IndyStar Mr. Football Award. Kiser led his team to back-to-back state titles and is headed to Notre Dame next year.

He threw for 1,183 yards and 18 touchdowns and rushed for 2,109 yards and 44 TDs. He had a very good season. However, I just told you that Romeir Elliott put up darn near 2,980 yards and 40 touchdowns in the BEST conference in the state, the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference, at the Class 6A level and he wasn’t even a finalist!!! Excuse my grammar but Wheredeydodatat?

Let’s keep it real or all the way 100, whichever comes 1st! That’s like giving some cat that plays Division III college football the Heisman Trophy because he rushed for 5,000 yards. Not only that, they would give him the award without allowing Kyler Murray to even be a finalist. This is what just happened in Indiana. OUTRAGE!!!!

There is a reason why this is the first time that a Class A player has won the award. In the past they’ve never straight up eliminated the most obvious choice for the award as a finalist. David Bell balled out this season but I knew that when the voters looked at the numbers alone, with Romeir being eliminated from the discussion altogether, Bell’s 1,542 yards and 22 touchdowns wouldn’t be enough to win it. Especially once the hustle was in.

Romeir Elliott

You can’t look David Bell nor Romeir Elliott in their eyes and tell them or anyone watching this game that someone playing Class A ball was more OUTSTANDING than they were while blasting teams in the MIC from start to finish this season. They played 14 games with 12 of them against conference opponents and the other two games were against the two best teams in Kentucky and they finished UNDEFEATED.

David Bell

They played the BEST competition ALL season long and balled out only to get hustled by coaches that wanted to finally see a Class A player win the Award. What kind of system is that? If you want it to be fair then just create a Mr. Football Award for every Class. However, if you’re telling folks that it’s given to the MOST OUTSTANDING PLAYER for the year. Then it can’t go to the guy playing against the worst competition.

Put Romeir Elliott in Class A and he rushes for 8,000 yards and 80 touchdowns. Put David Bell in Class A and he catches 200 balls for 5,000 yards and 50 touchdowns. It’s not even close!!!

And PLEASE stop saying that Kiser’s a Notre Dame recruit so that justifies him winning the award. No it doesn’t!!! The award is supposed to go to the MOST OUTSTANDING PLAYER for the year. Not the person with the perceived best offer. That makes no sense. Romeir Elliott got robbed by not even being a finalist in the first place, let alone not winning the award. Then David Bell, the ABSOLUTE best player in the state, got robbed too. It’s a darn shame but I guess everyone will just have to get over it. Stop me when I start lyin’!

  1. Man Jay…I was floored when I saw this. Even the kid who won knows he had no business winning! Norte Dame…and!?!?

  2. Go get em’ Eucker!! Rattle those armchairs. You know best!! “He missed the tag!!!” Heard it all before. Same tune – different station!! If you want to honor Bell and Elliott then DO THAT!! say GOOD stuff about them and spread the GOOD word. Why do you want to hack at the winner?

  3. While I agree they should be finalist, I disagree with your assessment on what their numbers would look like if they played Class A ball. They without a doubt had bigger, stronger, more athletic teammates on their team playing 6A. They would not have had the offensive line they had playing A or a better QB playing A. You could make the same analogy about Mr Kiser. If he had better players around him playing 6A, his numbers would have been a lot better. Look at Lebron James, best player in the world today but he had to go to a team with better talented players to win a championship. Nuff Said

  4. First of all. You say the award should go to the most deserveing player. Jack is the most deserving player. He had great numbers like the other two players, he led his team to its second State Championship in 2 years, he led the defense in tackles and intersections. The other 2 players you talk about getting screwed, what did they contribute on defense? You have a player that played both side of the ball and dominated on both and you say he is not deserving. Sounds like someone is bias. Have a great day

  5. Who the hell are these so called looking at? What film were they watching? I like to know who the butt holes were voted for this nobody from pioneer give me names or don’t they have the nerve typical politics this kid is goin to ride the bench and won’t see the field

  6. If Elliott and Bell played in 1A with Kiser, Jack would still put up these offensive stats….What you failed to mention in this “Homer” article is that Jack is going to Notre Dame as a Linebacker….Jack would still have 424 tackles and 20 INTs if the Warren Central duo were to have played in 1A……You also failed to mention the defensive statistics for Elliot and Bell in your article…..Oh wait…..There are none….If these boys were to play in 1A; their defensive numbers would still be what they were this year…..nonexistent…..Total joke of an article by a total joke of an author…..😂😉
