A few weeks ago I wrote a crazy Hot Joint entitled “Science” where I explained to boyz that Ben Davis’ Broc Thompson was the most COMPLETE wide receiver in the M.I.C.. That’s short for the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference where the best teams in the state typically play. There were a lot of boyz that went NUTS because I had the nerve to say it out loud. I just call it like I see it playboy! I’ve got no dog in the fight.
Not only is the dun ballin’ out of control but he’s on the verge of makin’ history over at Ben Davis. He’s got 842 yards receivin’ already and he’s potentially got five games left to play because the Giants are favored to win the state title this year. He only needs 60 yards to break the All-Time receivin’ yards record at the school. He needs only 148 more yards to become the only receiver in school history to top the 1,000 yard mark.
He needs only 6 more catches to break the single season reception record of 57 catches. Lastly the lil’/big homie needs a single touchdown to break the touchdown record of 13 receivin’ touchdowns in a season. Mind you, all of these records are held by different cats. He can literally walk out of Ben Davis, one of the best high school football programs in America, holdin’ all of the receivin’ records in his hands alone.
But that’s not why I’m ridin’ with this kid so heavy!! I’m in the car with him because he’s been able to do all of that after overcomin’ bein’ mistreated by other kids as a child. God made him special. So he’s given God special back.
Broc was diagnosed with Alopecia Areata when he was just six months old. It’s a type of hair loss that occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks hair follicles, which is where hair grows. The experts don’t know why it occurs but in rare instances it does. People with Alopecia Areata have patches of their hair fall out while it grows in other spots.
So as you can imagine, young Broc was teased and talked about as a kid and was constantly made to feel inferior. You know the drill bruh. Kids can be mean and it was tough for a young cat to make sense of. Ole boy was always athletic because he possessed the DNA from a father that was a Major League Baseball player. However, just because you’ve got the DNA doesn’t mean that you’re goin’ to be great. Greatness comes from bein’ delusional enough to believe that you can be whatever you desire to be and then bein’ aggressive enough to go after it. DNA can’t make up for desire and work ethic and fortunately Broc had both.
With the teasin’ and tauntin’ as his motivation, he set out to prove to boyz that he was as good, if not better, than everybody talkin’ about him. So in my ghetto vernacular, ole boy put in work!
Let’s keep it real or all the way 100, whichever comes 1st! In the Hot Joint where I explained that he was the most COMPLETE receiver out here I wasn’t just talkin’ about him catchin’ the football. He’s got crazy body control, he runs routes like he was born to do it, he fights for the football and he blocks. Do you realize why he does all of that? It’s because he’s fightin’ for his respect out here on every play.
I was born with only one full arm and was treated the same way Broc was treated as a child. So when I see him workin’ his butt off I know why he’s puttin’ in so much work. He’s fightin’ for his respect!! Yes, he wants to win and yes he wants to be great. However, more than anything he wants to be respected.
Here’s the magnificent thing about this kid. When I sat down with him he cared nothin’ about breakin’ the records that I told you about earlier. All he was concerned with was Ben Davis winnin’ the state championship. And guess what? He was sincere about that. He’s been in the zone of fightin’ for his respect for so long that the work ethic comes naturally now. The blessin’ is that because he was teased and talked about for so long, all those people responsible for tryin’ to break his spirit have created a monster that can’t be stopped now. He’s grindin’ because he’s on a mission to become better everyday. Respect the grind bruh.
But here’s the crazy thing, I’m blown away by how humble he is. He loves his teammates and wants them all to do great. If he has a big game he wants his boyz to get off too. That’s what you call bein’ a leader and a special person.
Look at the kid that everybody talked about and teased when they started school. Now he’s one of the leaders on the No.1 team in the state and the No.11 team in America. Credit his folks for always believin’ in him and bein’ the comforters that he needed them to be when he didn’t understand his mission.
God makes no mistakes and he set Broc Thompson apart to be the role model for other kids with Alopecia to look up to. As a matter of fact, he’s a role model for all kids to look up to. Because of this condition Broc has compassion for others that most cats his age can’t begin to possess.
I told him that God thought enough of him to make him different. So think enough of God to show him that you appreciate him makin’ you this way. Keep ballin’ out and keep ya head up playa. Keep bein’ that nice humble kid that all of the teachers and administrators love to see walk in the buildin’. Keep goin’ to class on a mission to be great. The scholarship offers are rollin’ in and the respect is on 10 right now. Salute young brother and remember that your hair is your brand. Make duns remember you everywhere you go by continuin’ to be great on and off of the field. Stop me when I start lyin’!
